In 1979, Memphis and its necropolis (area of the pyramids from Giza to Dahshur) were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Its open-air museum contains pharaonic monuments from the Ancient Era, highlighting the 13.5-meter statue of the lying Pharaoh Ramses II and the Alabaster Sphinx.<\/p>\n<p>Saqqara was the ancient necropolis of Memphis. Both pharaohs and high dignitaries and even sacred animals were buried in this enclosure. There is the pyramid of Djoser, pharaoh of the III dynasty, known as the Step Pyramid, which is the first built in stone.
